Demolition Derby Rules:
DRIVERS PLEASE
READ THIS INFORMATION
(rules may vary depending on event)
GENERAL RULES AND REGULATIONS
1. All Drivers must be 18 years or older. Proof of legal driving age is required along with a valid driver’s license.
2. The pit area will be restricted to participants and pit crew only. No one under 16 will be allowed into the pit area.
3. Any fighting or drinking in the pit area will subject the offender, and the car he is associated with, to suspension depending upon the seriousness of the incident and the decision of the officials. The driver/owner of every car is responsible for his pit crew and their conduct. (This include fans and family in the grandstand) The Police will be on the scene and will not tolerate any drinking or trouble.
4. Drivers will not be allowed to get out of their cars on the track to discuss any situation with the flagmen or officials. Also, drivers will not be allowed to unfasten their seat belts and helmets to work on cars. (Violations of this rule will result in disqualification)
5. Absolutely no one allowed in the scorer’s and announcer’s booth other than the officials
Any disagreement over technical questions or operations will be resolved by the racing officials.
No Drinking of alcoholic beverages! If we smell or detect that you have been drinking the day of the event you will not be allowed in the pit area.
Before bringing your vehicle to the Fairgrounds
All Glass and mirrors inside and out must be removed including windshields. Glass is not allowed in door panels or trunk must be cleaned out. All chrome or plastic trim and moldings must be removed, including all plastic Grills, tail lights and parking lights or other small items that might break off and shatter. We are doing this event inside an indoor arena so we don’t want anything flying into the crowd.
Absolutely no profane words or suggestive pictures will be allowed on your participating car. All cars should have a minimum 12 by 12 inch white metal number plate mounted to roof with bright number painted on both sides. Also must have a number on both front doors and be at least twelve inches in height, This is for scoring purposes and is a must!
Safety Rules
*All drivers must wear a good helmet and a seat belt and shoulder belts. A full face helmet with chin piece is recommended.
*All drivers must wear long sleeves and gloves while in the car! A fire retardant uniform, and gloves, and neck brace are recommended. Each car must have a fire extinguisher securely mounted but where the driver can release and use if necessary.
Pit crew must wear shirt and shoes or boots, and long pants are recommended.
*No driver should un-buckle their seat belt or helmet, or leaves your car for any reason during the derby, (exception if your car is on fire or unless authorized by an official and he tell you it is safe to exit your vehicle) IMMEDIATE DISQUALIFICATION WILL RESULT if you do not follow this rule!
*All vehicles must be equipped with fully charged and functional fire extinguisher-Type BC or ABC-within easy reach of driver. Extinguisher must be mounted and have quick release mechanism. ABSOLUTELY NO EXCEPTIONS!
*The driver’s door must have support for the driver’s protection. Reinforcement materials and design should absorb the energy to protect the driver. Supports on the outside of the driver’s door must not be such that interferes with other drivers cars. Padding the driver’s compartment is recommended. You may bolt or weld channel iron, grader blades, almost anything on the drivers door to help make safer.
Car rules
1. 1970 and newer American Cars and wagons only. No Lincoln’s, Imperials or Imperials sub frames, 4X4’s, Ambulances, Hearses, Limos, Trucks – remember if you are not sure about the rules call us phone 940-683-4742 and ask for Ed Beckley.
2. Suspension must remain at standard height –stock type leaf springs and coils are mandatory. Shocks may not be welded, strapped or blocked. Spring leafs may not be welded - use any automotive rear end, but must be 5 lug. Welded or posi-track optional. No more than 2 3/8 inch chain pieces or two loops of #9 wire or chains from rear ends / springs to body or frame. Stock type springs only. No truck springs. No welding on spring brackets, no beefing them up. No welding or strengthen rear end controlling arms. They must work. Only the driver’s side body seams may be welded solid. Other seams may be spot welded. No welding body to frame.
3. Fenders may be cut for tire clearance. Bumpers ends may be cut. Bumper shocks may be welded solid.
4. Trunk lids must have two holes cut (size of footballs or bigger) for inspection of trunk area unless back seat is removed so we can see.
5. Trunk area be empty and clean / no added ballast / trunk pins cannot be connected to the frame and limited to 6- 1” bolts. No wires, straps or chains from trunk lid to trunk floor. Steel straps used to weld trunk shut may not exceed 2” wide x ¼” thick x 6” long and you are allowed only two. This also applies to station wagon tailgates. Two 3/8 inch chain can be used if trunk is not welded to hold it or any doors and hoods in position. No bolts thru trunk lid to frame.
6. All cars must have a hood, and securely fastened down, also must have holes (size of footballs or bigger) for inspection or fire extinguishers access. Hoods may not extend to front bumper, Hoods in 60% of original position.
7. If wiring or chaining hoods or trunks, use no larger than #9 wire or equivalent size chains (this means 3/8” chains not log chain). You may have a total of 2 chains or 3 strands of wire on the trunk and same for hood. Not a combination of chain/bolts/hood pins pick one
8. It is mandatory to have your trunk lid chained down with one loose loop of chain or to have the seams spot welded.
9. If using wire in windows use no larger than #9 wire and no more than 3 strands in each opening. No wire in front left door windows opening.
10. Radiator must remain in front of engine/ original position. Radiator support must remain in original position. No auxiliary coolers. No water tanks. No beefing up radiator support, no added radiator guards.
11. Battery must be moved to inner car area, and must be secured, covered with foam, inner tube, or plastic. No more than two regular automotive batteries or one CAT type battery. Batteries must not be in same area as fuel tank. No electric fuel pumps.
12. Original gas tank must be removed. A supplement tank (maximum 6 gallons capacity must be a boat tank or well made fuel cell) shall be placed and fastened securely in the rear passenger area. Fuel tank must be shrouded with a firewall. No Original tanks allowed. Firewall should be made of fire resistant material.
13. Engine must be in original location, you may use any gasoline motor. Motor and transmission can be secured with chain or straps.
14. Tires maximum 15” DOT passenger car or LT tires. No off road, studded tires or tractor lugs. Nothing inside of tires except air. No water or concrete in tires. All Season or Mud and Snows are accepted.
15. Door safety - You may put a brace between the left side and right side door posts connecting the two together. An X brace behind seat is recommended that ties both sides of the car. You may also have a bar across dash area (don’t use bigger than 3” material and 3/8” wall. The maximum chain size is 3/8” to use instead of welding the seams of the car. Bring extra chain and wire to track for emergency purpose. Foam padding is allowed and recommended by driver door. Welding of all drivers’ side body seams is allowed, but no other welding to the frame or any other components not mentioned here in these rules.
The driver’s door area can be welded solid and should have as many added braces as possible for your safety. Roll cages are not mandatory, but they are allowed and should be constructed in a professional way with plenty of driver area padding.
The rules and regulations set forth above are designed to provide for the orderly conduct of a Demolition Derby event and to establish minimum safety acceptable for such an event. These rules shall govern the condition of this event, and by participating in these event, participants are deemed to have complied with these rules. NO EXPRESSED OR IMPLIED WARRANTY OF SAFETY SHALL RESULT FROM PUBLICATIONS OF OR COMPLIANCE WITH THESE RULES AND/OR REGULATIONS. They are intended as a guide for the conduct of the sport and are in no way a guarantee against injury or death to a participant, spectator, or official. Participating or viewing an event such as this has its own set of dangers especially from the Pit Area. If you feel your car is not safe then by all means do not compete and risk your life or injury. The race director shall be empowered to permit reasonable and appropriate deviation from any of the specifications herein or impose any further restrictions that in his opinion do not alter the minimum acceptable requirements. NO EXPRESSED OR IMPLIED WARRANTY OF SAFETY SHALL RESULT FROM SUCH ALTERATION OF SPECIFICATIONS. Any interpretation of these rules is left to the discretion of the officials. Their decisions are final.
